Colombo, Aug. 6 — A confidential meeting reportedly held between former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi on July 1 has prompted heightened concern within the Sri Lankan government, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake ordering a special intelligence operation to uncover the full details of the encounter, defence sources said.
According to highly placed security officials, President Dissanayake has directed the State Intelligence Service (SIS) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the meeting, which was allegedly conducted without the knowledge of the Sri Lankan High Commission in India.
Unannounced Meeting After Official Engagement
Reliable sources indicate that Wickremesinghe was engaged in an official discussion at Lok Niwas with New Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena around midday on July 1.
However, after leaving Lok Niwas, the former President is said to have travelled to an undisclosed location where he met Ajit Doval, one of India’s most influential figures in national security and regional strategic policy.
The Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi has reportedly informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it had no prior knowledge of Wickremesinghe’s meeting with Doval — a revelation that has intensified concerns within the new administration.
High-Level Discussions on Regional Stability
Defence intelligence sources suggest that the conversation may have centred on Sri Lanka’s ongoing political turbulence, economic reform trajectory, and regional security concerns that India views as strategically significant.
Ajit Doval, widely regarded as a key architect of India’s national security doctrine, plays a decisive role in shaping New Delhi’s geopolitical posture in South Asia.
