The United States has appointed Eric Meyer as its new Ambassador to Sri Lanka, marking a significant diplomatic transition at a time when Washington and Colombo are seeking to strengthen political, economic and security cooperation.
The U.S. Embassy in Colombo announced that Meyer was officially sworn in at the State Department in Washington, D.C., expressing confidence that his arrival would “deepen the partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka, advancing our shared interests and priorities.”
Meyer, a career Senior Foreign Service Officer, brings extensive experience in South and Central Asian affairs, most recently serving as Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA). His background includes work on regional security, governance, development partnerships and U.S. strategic engagement across the Indo‑Pacific.
He succeeds Ambassador Julie J. Chung, who completed her term in January 2026 after serving in Colombo since 2022. During the interim period, Deputy Chief of Mission Jayne Howell has been functioning as Chargé d’Affaires, overseeing embassy operations until Meyer’s arrival in Colombo.
Meyer’s appointment comes amid renewed U.S. interest in supporting Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, governance reforms, and maritime security cooperation. His tenure is expected to focus on stabilising bilateral ties, expanding development assistance, and strengthening collaboration on regional security and democratic governance.
The Embassy said it looks forward to working under Meyer’s leadership as he prepares to take up duties in Colombo in the coming weeks.
