The Supreme Court today concluded hearings on the petitions filed challenging the government‑proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution and announced that its confidential determination on the Bill’s constitutionality will be forwarded to the Speaker of Parliament.
A five‑judge bench headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena issued the order after considering submissions made by counsel representing petitioners who opposed the Bill, those who supported it, and the Attorney General.
The bench further directed that any written submissions relating to the petitions must be filed before 3:00 p.m. tomorrow.
The directive followed a request by lawyers for the petitioners, who sought an opportunity to respond to the submissions made by the Solicitor General and counsel for the intervening petitioners. The Chief Justice declined the request for additional oral submissions and instead instructed parties to present any further arguments in writing, formally concluding the hearing.
