A formal complaint has been lodged with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, accusing 159 Members of Parliament of committing an offence by depositing their salaries into a bank account belonging to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
The complaint, submitted by the Centre for Free Operations, targets MPs elected to Parliament under the National People’s Power (NPP). According to the organisation, the MPs have violated provisions of the Anti‑Corruption Act by transferring their parliamentary allowances—benefits intended to serve the public interest—into a political party’s bank account.
The petition requests that all 159 NPP MPs be summoned to record statements and that the JVP’s bank accounts be examined as part of a full investigation.
Government ministers have recently claimed that the salaries of 159 MPs are being deposited into the JVP’s account, a statement that has intensified political debate and scrutiny.
Addressing the media, Attorney‑at‑Law Asha Kahawatta and journalist Thushara Weerarathna of the Centre for Free Operations said the practice constitutes both bribery and corruption, urging authorities to take immediate action.
