Global Tamil Forum Congratulates Navi Pillay on the Nobel Peace Prize
The Global Tamil Forum (GTF) extends its warmest congratulations to Ms Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her extraordinary and enduring contribution to human rights, international justice and the pursuit of accountability for the gravest crimes against humanity.
Ms Pillay’s life and work embody the courage to stand for justice, even in the face of immense power and adversity. Emerging from the crucible of the struggle for freedom and human rights in apartheid South Africa, in the era of greats such as Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, both fellow Nobel laureates, she carried the principles of equality, dignity and justice far beyond her homeland. As a lawyer, jurist, international judge and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, she helped bring these principles to the forefront of the international arena.
Her contribution to international justice has been profound. She played a pivotal role in advancing the recognition of rape and sexual violence as crimes under international law, helping to ensure that such atrocities could no longer be dismissed as inevitable consequences of conflict or treated with impunity. Her work has strengthened the foundations of accountability and affirmed the dignity and rights of survivors.
For the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, Ms Pillay’s contribution during her tenure as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights holds particular significance. At a time when the grave allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Sri Lanka risked being forgotten or marginalised, she helped ensure that accountability remained firmly on the international agenda. Her call for an international investigation marked an important moment in the continuing struggle for truth and justice for the victims and survivors of the Sri Lankan conflict. Although meaningful justice remains elusive to this day, the international attention sustained through these efforts continues to offer hope to victims, survivors and their families.
Members of the Global Tamil Forum have had the privilege of engaging with Ms Pillay and her officials during her time as High Commissioner. Those interactions left a lasting impression on our members, strengthening our resolve to articulate the cause of human rights and justice without discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity, religion or any other identity. Her principled leadership, fearlessness and determination to confront difficult issues without favour or bias have been deeply inspiring.
Her more recent work examining atrocities in Gaza, including her forthright conclusions concerning genocide, further demonstrates her unwavering commitment to the principle that international law must apply universally. At a time when international law, human rights and multilateral institutions face mounting challenges, including from powerful states, this recognition is especially consequential. We are grateful to the Nobel Committee for its visionary decision to honour a life dedicated to defending these universal principles and for reaffirming the importance of international justice and accountability. Indeed, awarding the Peace Prize to Navi Pillay explicitly recognises the need to support, fortify and expand the global rule of law, and the importance of strengthening institutions such as the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court.
As Tamil people, we also take immense pride in Ms Pillay’s Tamil heritage. Her remarkable journey is a source of inspiration to Tamils across the world and a powerful reminder that our heritage can contribute to the advancement of humanity, justice and the protection of the most vulnerable.
At 85, Ms Pillay continues to champion the values that have guided her throughout her life. Her unwavering commitment reminds us that the pursuit of justice does not end with a title, a position or an award, but is a lifelong responsibility.
The Global Tamil Forum wishes Ms Pillay continued good health, happiness and fulfilment. We hope that she will continue to contribute to the cause of human rights and international justice for many years to come, and that her courage, integrity and lifelong service will inspire future generations to stand fearlessly for truth, dignity and justice for all.
