The magisterial inquiry into the violent clashes at the Negombo Prison has taken a dramatic turn, with fresh allegations suggesting that critical evidence is being deliberately suppressed under the guise of national security.

On July 30, Negombo Magistrate Selani Perera issued a strict order barring all media outlets from reporting any part of the testimony given by Head Jailor Wickrema Jayantha Kumara, who testified for two hours under CID direction. The magistrate warned that the information revealed could seriously compromise national security if made public, and instructed the Court Registrar to keep the testimony under tight protection.

However, according to a senior security correspondent, the situation may be far more complex than a routine national‑security precaution.

Allegations of a Cover‑Up

The correspondent stated that it is now “very clear the Negombo Prison clash was entirely the result of acting in a completely irresponsible manner.” He further alleged that a coordinated effort is underway to conceal key evidence in order to shield certain political figures and officials from accountability.

According to this assessment, national security is being used as a shield—a justification to lock away testimony that may expose failures, negligence, or political interference linked to the prison unrest.

These claims, while unverified, add a new layer of seriousness to an already sensitive investigation.

CID Investigation Continues Under Scrutiny

The CID informed court that a formal investigation is ongoing, led by four Assistant Superintendents of Police. Forensic reports from the Government Analyst—covering firearms and sharp weapons recovered from the scene—are still pending.

Magistrate Perera has ordered the CID to submit a detailed progress report, signalling heightened judicial oversight amid growing public concern.

With testimony sealed, evidence protected, and allegations of a cover‑up emerging, the Negombo Prison clash has escalated from a violent incident into a matter with potential national‑level implications.
